The fourth edition of the family tree has major changes in the way it is organised and dozens of minor errors corrected. Much new information has been added, varying from minor additional facts, to some completely new sections. I have also added many images that relate to the places where our relatives lived, which hopefully provide a visual context to the words. Where possible images have been increased in size to improve legibility.

Part of the motivation for writing this family tree was to make sense of the facts. The style used goes further than a list of people, places and dates of birth marriage and death. I have tried to dig a bit deeper to link the facts into a story of each person, showing social relationships and family events that influenced the direction of their lives.

INTRODUCTION

The family tree is very long and detailed, and at first glance appears to be a long list of repetitive names and dates, but within these ‘pages’ there are some remarkable, courageous and even infamous tales. Here are some hints about the stories hidden among the mass of detail;
•Long lives, and sadly, many very short lives. Some with great tragedy and others with great joy; but you have to use your imagination to see the latter.
•Multiple marriages (after partners died) by men and women.
•Criminality features prominently; from minor offences like stealing coals, sheep, turnips or firewood, poaching, leaving work (yes that was a crime), trespass and breaking hedges to more serious acts of avoiding tax (through smuggling), abandoning families, stealing money, 'riotous' behaviour and occasionally assault.
•It is surprising that only one of our extended family managed to get themselves transported to Australia as convicts. The result was some distant relatives living in Tasmania.
•Punishments generally varied from imprisonment for periods varying from weeks up to two years. Sometimes harsher punishments included hard labour and occasionally a whipping!
•Terms of imprisonment were given to males, females and children as young as eleven!

•Women often bore ten or more children (often one every two years), and raised, fed and cared for them; sometimes by themselves without the support of a ‘breadwinner’.
•Unmarried mothers were not uncommon and their children seemed to be accepted as a fact of life.
•Common christian names such as John, James, Mary and Elizabeth but also original names such as Enoch, Virtue, Kezia, Montague, Charity, Lemuel, Shadrach, Drusilla, Demaris, Mansell and Advent.
•Most of our earlier ancestors lived in poverty, however some lived 'comfortable' lives and a handful were relatively well off. Some children born into poverty or orphaned, managed to make a life for themselves 'against the odds'.
•Humble and traditional occupations such as servants, labourers, blacksmiths, bricklayers, thatchers, carpenters, fishermen, members of the military and seamstresses to unexpected ones such as ‘coal maker’, sojourner, colt breaker, ostler, net makers, twine spinners and publicans. Surprisingly (in view of the number of law breakers in the family) we had a number of law enforcing relatives including a policeman, customs officer and a prison officer.
* A few relatives in our extended family became well known in their 'fields of endeavour'. An example is Arthur Grimsdell who captained Tottenham Hotspurs in the FA Cup final in 1921
•Rapid social and economic changes in the late 1800's led to some family members becoming skilled workers; including electricians, plumbers, railway workers, engine drivers, chemists, iron moulders, managers, at least one teacher and a 'dealer in talking machines'.
•Disasters such as the 'Great Fire of Handley', infectious diseases that killed multiple members of families and the forced relocation of an entire village at the whim of a wealthy landowner.
•War heroes including one who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and many who were badly wounded or who made the ultimate sacrifice and died on the battlefield.

•Most of our family spent their whole lives within a few miles of their birthplace. However a handful, bravely ventured further afield including to NZ, Australia and US
•And there is an intriguing link to wealthy and influential landed gentry, which goes all the way back to William the Conqueror and other Royal Families.
•There are many mysterious relatives who seemed to disappear without a trace, leaving no further records of their lives. If this happened at a young age, the most common reason was infant mortality, which was very common in the 1800’s. In the case of adults a common reason was migration. Many people from Great Britain took the opportunity to start a new life in New Zealand, Canada, America or Australia. The latter country was very attractive in the middle of the nineteenth century because there were schemes set up to attract migrants (especially women and those with skills) which offered a free passage.
